Product Description

American boys' fiction under pseudonym used by the Stratemeyer Syndicate who produced Tom Swift series, Nancy Drew mysteries, the Hardy Boys, Dave Fearless and many others.

Customer Review: Dated, but it still demonstrates the wonders of "modern" technology

This book in the original Tom Swift series has Tom using his airship that can travel at an "astounding" 100 miles per hour. The featured invention is a telephone where the image is captured by a device connected to the phone, sent over the telephone wire and then used to create an image. Tom's dear friend Mr. Damon is involved with some shady characters and he is about to lose his fortune. In an attempt to save his money, Mr. Damon secretly meets with the evil gang and is kidnapped. The kidnappers then contact Mrs. Damon, informing her that they will release Mr. Damon if she signs the papers to release her holdings as well.
Tom and his pal Ned follow the case, eventually collaborating with the telephone company to install his photo telephone in several phone booths where the kidnapper is likely to call from. Luck is with them, the kidnapper uses one of the phones and they capture his image. In an additional stroke of luck, Tom's car breaks down near where Mr. Damon his being held and Tom, Ned and an airman named Mr. Halling pursue the gang and capture the ringleaders. Mr. Damon is freed and his money returned.
The development of modern technology and the advancement of society combine to make the original Tom Swift stories quaint. However, they still possess a certain charm, as they deal with the advancement of technology and how it affects the society around them. I enjoyed reading this story, because I kept that context in mind while I was reading it. Anyone else who can keep that frame of mind will be able to do the same.
