Rupert Hughes (1872—1956) was a historian, novelist, film director, and composer based in Hollywood. He was the uncle of Howard Hughes. His three volume scholarly biography of George Washington broke new ground in demythologizing the general and was well received by historians. Hughes, active in state politics, was one of the founders of the California State Guard in 1940.[1]
