Rossi is the plural of Rosso, meaning the color red in Italian language. It has other less diffuse variants such as De Rossi or Rossini. In the case of Italian Jews, the name refers to the fact that at some point in time they had to wear a distinctive red hat in Venice. Another variant, the Russo surname, is related to the singular form Rosso and it is the second most frequent surname in Italy, being more diffuse in the South of Italy[1] with respect to Rossi, instead mainly diffuse in Northern Italy[2].
