Beard, Mary Ritter, 1876-1958We have 1 book for this author.Mary Ritter Beard (August 5, 1876 – August 14, 1958), was a United States historian and campaigner for woman's suffrage. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Like her husband Charles A. Beard (married in 1900) whom she met at her alma mater, DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, Mary was an influential historian. She was also renowned for her social activism. She co-wrote "The Rise of American Civilization" in 1927 with her husband. She also wrote her first book on "Municipal Housekeeping" of civic-minded women and edited many books on the history of women, including "America Through Women's Eyes" from which Ellen Carol Dubois and Lynn Dumenil's "Through Women's Eyes" drew its title. She is also known for her study "Women As a Force in History: a Study in Traditions and Realities" (1946). She was interred in Hartsdale in Westchester County in New York. See also
