John McElroy (1846-1929) was a journalist and author. He wrote The Red Acorn and Andersonville: A Story of Rebel Military Prisons (1879) (based on his fourteen month incarceration in the Confederate prison camp of Andersonville). [1] He was the brother-in-law of President Chester A. Arthur, McElroy having married his sister, Mary, who served as First Lady of the United States for her widowed brother.
