He was born in New York City and educated at Harvard University, University of Berlin, and Columbia University. From 1909 to 1911, he was an instructor in English at Harvard. He was also a friend and biographer of Theodore Roosevelt and after Roosevelt's death in 1919 helped found the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) where he served as Secretary and Director from 1919-1957, helping to collect and compile Roosevelt's papers, write an early biography and steer the organization's early activities. In the TRA, Hageforn engaged in a wide spectrum of programs and activities to preserve TR's memory for almost 40 years. Among other works, Hagedorn published:
