Jessup, Henry Harris, 1832-1910

Henry Harris Jessup (1832-1910) was an American Presbyterian missionary. He was born at Montrose, Pa., son of the jurist William Jessup (1797-1868); graduated at Yale in 1851 and at Union Theological Seminary in 1855; and immediately entered the foreign-missionary service of the Presbyterian church in Tripoli, Syria. In 1860 he was transferred to Beirut and became prominent at that important station. He wrote, besides various works for the American Press at Beirut:

  • The Women of the Arabs (1873)
  • The Mohammedan Missionary Problem (1879)
  • The Greek Church and Protestant Missions (1884)
  • Kamil, a Moslem Convert (1899)
  • Fifty-Three Years in Syria (1910)
