He was a converso, a Jew converted to Christianity. little is known of him. He is known for writing La Celestina (originally titled Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea) in 1499. He was a Spanish dramatist, author of La Celestina, considered like one of works summit of the history of Spanish Literature and the most important without a doubt in the transition between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Nowadays there is no doubt that he is the author of the Celestine, who would have written with few more years than her protagonist, Calisto who is 23 and he would be 25. His family would have been persecuted by the Inquisición and he himself has appeared in documents like defendant by this institution, which with these documents guarantees him as author of the Celestine. The author revealed his name and famous birthplace in an acrostic code at the beginning of the second edition of year 1500. No other work is known by him nor is he mentioned by any of its contemporaries. That day 3 is conserved its testament, dated, very detailed, that has been the delight of the critical to the power to study its abundant library. The story tells of Calisto, a bourgeois who falls in love with Melibea, the daughter of a nobleman; they become engaged following the machinations of Celestina, but their love has a tragic end after an accident in which Calisto falls off a ladder.
